Marketing for tradespeople: how to get more booked jobs from your website
Most tradespeople don't need more marketing — they need a website that actually turns local searches into phone calls. Here's the honest, no-fluff playbook I use with every client.
1. Show up when people search "near me"
When someone types "emergency plumber Manchester" or "roofer near me", Google shows three things: the map pack, the local business cards, then the blue links. If you're not in the top few, you're invisible. Two moves fix this fast:
- Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile — hours, service area, photos, services list.
- Ask every happy customer for a Google review. Ten honest reviews will beat a ten-year-old business with none.
2. Your website has one job: get the call
A pretty website that doesn't book jobs is a bad website. On mobile, a visitor decides in about three seconds. Make the phone number and a "Request a quote" button visible without scrolling. Everything else — gallery, about, testimonials — supports that one action.
Three things every trade site needs above the fold: what you do, where you work, and how to contact you right now.
3. Speed and trust win the job
If your site takes more than three seconds to load on 4G, you've already lost half your visitors. Compress images, avoid heavy builders, and keep the design clean. Then earn trust with real photos of your work, named reviews with towns, and clear pricing or "from £" ranges where possible.
4. One page per service, one page per town
Google rewards specificity. A single "Services" page is weaker than five focused pages: "Boiler repair", "Bathroom installation", "Gas safety checks", etc. If you serve multiple towns, add a short page for each with genuine local content — landmarks, common jobs, real projects you've done there.
5. Follow up before they call your competitor
Speed to lead matters more than any ad. Reply to every enquiry within an hour during working hours — a quick "Thanks, I can be there Tuesday morning, does 9am work?" wins jobs that polished three-page proposals lose.
A simple weekly rhythm
- Ask two customers for a Google review.
- Post one job photo to your Google Business Profile.
- Reply to every enquiry within the hour.
- Update one page on your site with a fresh project.
Do this for eight weeks and the phone starts ringing on its own. If you're a plumber, read the plumber-specific digital marketing guide for emergency-callout tactics.
